It looks like it has been December since I have written my blog. It has been nearly two months, to the date. I have missed writing my blog but I’ve kept up with my newspaper writing and I wish I could share that with you but it is now behind a paywall. I liked it better when it was not. The blog and writing of my column overlap, the blog a more personal part of my life but the column becoming increasingly so.
In my most recent column, I had fun defining journalist, reporter and columnist. I then defined definition and connotation, my favourite part writing, “Definition of definition.” Here is an excerpt from the column:
I began the writing of this column looking up definitions of certain words using online Oxford Dictionaries: journalist, reporter, columnist. Definition of journalist, noun, a person who writes for newspapers or magazines or prepares news to be broadcast on radio or television. Definition of reporter, noun, a person who reports, especially one employed to report news or conduct interviews for the press or broadcasting media. Definition of columnist, noun, a journalist contributing regularly to a newspaper or magazine.
I think of columnist as a writer who adds a personal angle to a story. In reporting I think of facts, in journalism I think of truth. A column, to me, brings a more formal, factual style of writing and makes it more personal. When I write, I like it to be personal.
I’m interested in the difference between definition and connotation: Definition of definition, noun, a statement of the exact meaning of a word, especially in a dictionary. Definition of connotation, noun, an idea or feeling which a word invokes for a person in addition to its literal or primary meaning.
Now that has me thinking of the definition of columnist, but I am too full on definitions. What I know is I like blogging, I like being a columnist. I like being a painter, I like being a writer. These things are in my spirit, these things are intrinsically within me.
I was not made for business. My creativity does not exist well within it. Not that I mind a little business, I exist in it. I have my real estate license and I like that. I am challenged in a good way and that adds a variety to my life, which is good. But I’m conflicted in the back and forth between business and creativity.
Such is life, sometimes life calls for that. But in the experience, I am thinking more and more of becoming a full time artist. Time will tell and, in the meantime, I continue to take the next steps forward. And I hope you are, too, in your beautiful life.
